Digby Watching Whale east coast style: This isn't Tadoussac watching whaleThis is our first morning in Nova Scotia and we'd come out onto the Digby Neck to Tiverton. Having landed in Halifax around 11:30pm the night before, we got up early Saturday morning and set off from Halifax, at the center of the Nova Scotian peninsula, and headed four hours west to Tiverton to do some whale watching. How does this compare to Portland Maine whale watching, or whale watching Connecticut style?
![]() Since Tiverton faces the east coast of the U.S. some might compare this to a whale watch in New England, perhaps either Salem whale watch tour and cruises, or Rhode Island whale watching.
These are Digby Nova photo Scotia.
Since the whale watching along the Digby Neck is some of the best in the world, we were surprised that we didn't find a comprehensive vacation package for whale watching travel for this tide times Bay of Fundy region. All of the whale watching businesses in the region (six or seven) communicate with each other in order to cooperate in finding whales. They figure that if they all have a successful sighting that people will drive into the middle of nowhere and pay them \$35-$50/person, rather than seeking a sightiing elsewhere.
Our whale watching cruise was a 1pm, and lasted for 3 hours. We saw no whales (neither did the other 5-6 boats) and it was the first time in 6 weeks that they failed to have a sighting. We did get a raincheck from our guide operator so that we could come back again at no cost (other than the 4 hour drive).
Since Tiverton is actuall on a long skinny island, aptly named Long Island, that lies between the mainland part of Digby Neck and Briar Island. We neeed to ferry over to Tiverton. Yes, Tiverton is a working fishing village, as the photos suggest. And yes...it is low tide. The tides in the Bay of Fundy are those that have the most dramatic difference between high and low tides in the world.
Does the Nova Scotia photo below, look like a light house replica or the light house club at fagers island?
Turn on the house light Nova Scotia.
Whale whatching Nova Scotia style. Hotel and whail watching rates Nova Scotia.
After leaving Tiverton, we drove back up the Digby neck to the town of Digby, where we had dinner - of course they were World Famous Digby Scallops. |
