We'd spent the previous night camping near the Confederation Bridge on the PEI (Prince Edward Island) side.

Now we had just driven from there, stopping briefly in Pugwash before moving on toward the fascinating Balmoral Grist Mill.

We stopped in Pugwash at their Pewter Store (locally manufactured) to see if Lynn could find a suitable Christmas tree ornament. She didn't. I found a shirt and bought it since you-know-who...hadn't deliver our you-know-what.

Our main goal now was to hit Balmoral Mills and then head toward Peggy's Cove. Balmoral Mills has a functioning grist mill. It was built 175 years ago to be a one person operation, with all sorts of grain elevators, pulley's and whatnot between the three floors. The fella was milling grain during our tour, and all the belts and wheels in the photos are blurry because they are moving.

Notice the water wheel. It's not moving. Not because of the Nova Scotian drought, but because it doesn't power the mill.

Funny story. When they were restoring the mill to working condition they excavated part of an old water wheel. So, they had a new wheel build to that size and attached it to the mill. However, they couldn't figure out how to connect the wheel to the workings inside the mill to get things 'going'. After a little more scrutiny they found that THIS mill is not powered by a water wheel, but a water turbine. They now suspect the water wheel they found was one that had drifted down from an upstream mill. They've left the water wheel on the mill for now.

It was time to head toward Peggy's Cove, but before we got there we stopped at The Nova Scotia Wildlife Park.

So we left the Balmoral Grist Mill behind.
