Titanic MuseamTitanic MuseumThis morning we'd been to the Old Burial Grounds on our walking self-tour of Halifax. Here are other things we saw after that. The Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame Museum was free. And we found out why...it didn't rock. Although we now now that the inventor of basketball was Canadian (thank you Dr. Naismith) and that his original team had 3 Nova Scotians on it. We also found out that we'd drive by the pond where the game of Hockey had originally be played (or at least the first account of it).
We'd already been to the Old Burial Grounds
At the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, the most impressive thing was the exhibits regarding the Titanic. Halifax sent the first to boats to recover survivors, and there are many artifacts from the ship that local sailors found weeks after the sinking. They're favorite piece to brag on is the fully intact deck chair, the only fully intact deck chair from the Titanic to have been recovered. We didn't take photos of the Titanic stuff, but Sunday (tomorrow) we'll visit the cemetary and take photos of the gravestones of those who were buried in Halifax.
At the museum we also toured another ship, the Acacia, which was an ocean cartography ship. This was the first boat we toured with a 'guide.' He had lots of stories to tell about the nature of the ships expeditions to maps the ocean floor, and of other museum visitors who had served on the ship during it years of operation. I personally like the Cape Sable Better, but the stories about the Acacia gave us a better idea as to what life at sea in the early-mid 1900's was like.
Tomorrow, Sunday, we go home and will stop at the Fairlawn Cemetery on the way to the Halifax Airport. The Fairlawn Cemetery is the Halifax cemetary that has the gravesites of several Titanic victims. |
